Flexamat | Blue Star Highway, Douglas MI

Background

Along Blue Star Highway in the Village of Douglas, Michigan, a section of roadside embankment had washed out and needed a fast, durable repair. The Allegan County Road Commission turned to a solution it had relied on before: Flexamat.

Challenge

Roadside washouts call for a quick fix that also holds up over the long term. A short-term patch risked repeated failure and recurring maintenance on a busy corridor; the Road Commission needed erosion protection that would stabilize the slope permanently and revegetate naturally.

Solution

interfaceh2o supplied Flexamat — tied concrete blocks bonded to a high-strength geogrid that forms a flexible, permanent erosion-control mat. The Allegan County Road Commission has had success with Flexamat in the past, and the contractor, Quantum Construction, has used it as well and determined that Flexamat was the best solution to solve the long-term washout issue. Once placed, the mat conforms to the channel and embankment and allows grass to grow up through the blocks — locking the soil in place while restoring a natural, green appearance.
